Welcome to the Uber-pappy's Jeep Project Page! I just recently got this Jeep from my father. This was the vehicle I learned to drive in and it has been my dads hunting mobile for over thirty years. It has been sitting garaged and unstared now for about three years. My dad says it's a 1958 Willys CJ-5, which is corroborated by the registrration. However, it has a front shackle reversal, a hole in front of the passenger side door, a completely utilitarian dash, the passenger seat tilts forward to access a compartment under the seat, and it has olive drab paint under the white. All of this tells me it an M38A1. All of the factory plates are gone, so I can't find the original VIN on it - I only have the registration which has a CJ-5 serial number. There were also no M38A1's made in 1958 except for export to Greece. My best guess is that the prior owner thrashed the heck out of it and bought a military surplus replacement tub. I've heard three stories of how he came by it. My dad says that he got it really cheap from a guy who wanted him to join a four wheelin' club back in the early sixties, one of my brothers says that he traded my brother's car for it, and the other brother says he won it in a card game. Who knows -- all that matters now is that it's in my garage. I would like to have this finished by the summer of 2002 but who knows. |
