The objective for going to Inverness was, of course, taking a ride
on Loch Ness. The loch is a really impressive body of water - over
three miles wide and twenty-one miles long! We stayed at the
Lyndon House (N:57°28.881 / W:04°14.508) in
Inverness. The picture is of a bridge that turn sideways to allow
boats by. |

Inverness is a smallish community on the East coast of Scotland and
about 5 miles West of Loch Ness. One thing that we found
interesting are the bilingual English/Gaelic street signs - I never
thought of it being a necessity, but like other parts of the world, the
deeper in the woods you go, the less likely change is going to happen. |
 |
This is a water inlet about 100 yards from our B&B. The
Scottish scenery is incredible! |
 |
This is the Torvean Golf Course (N:57°28.882 /
W:04°14.513) adjacent to one of the Jacobite Cruise docks.
We walked along the river on for a mile or so and then cut over to the
Jacobite location only to find that the cruise we wanted wasn't offered
at this location. It started to rain so we went into the golf club and
had a cup of tea and some soup. Very hospitable staff and patrons! |
 |
That night we had dinner in the Dickens Restaurant
(N:57°28.751 / W:04°13.636). The food
was good and I suppose the service was adequate. The service that
we received at all of our B&B's was excellent. Really, with the
exception of one place in Edinburgh, service in British restaurants was
pretty dismal by So Cal standards. |
 |
The next day we drove up to the Clansman Hotel
(N:57°21.861 / W:04°23.578), on the shores of Loch Ness, to the
Jacobite Cruise center. This is about six miles from the other
Jacobite place. It cost £8 per adult for an hour cruise before we
head to Edinburgh later in the day. |
 |
Our boat arrives. They do the one and two hour cruises every
hour. This is going to be cool, but suppose Nessie woke up on the
wrong side of the loch - can this boat really contend with a plesiosaur? |
 |
We're on the loch! (N:57°20.757 /
W:04°24.662). It's cold! Bring a jacket! |
 |
I don't think there's anywhere in Scotland that you could get away
from the varying shades of Green. |

Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness. Ya' know... If I
was going to have a summer castle, I can't think of a better location. |
